This is the best steak sauce ever. This Japanese steak sauce or hibachi sauce was inspired by Kobe Steak House a teppanyaki spot in Vancouver. I knew I had to recreate this amazing teppanyaki sauce. This sauce is not only great on steak but rice, prawns, chicken, or fish. You need to make this hibachi sauce! It only takes 5 minutes to make.
While steak is a delicious dish on its own, the addition of the right sauce can take it to the next level. This rich, savory Japanese steak sauce recipe adds an extra layer of flavor to the steak, making it irresistibly delicious.
This hibachi sauce was inspired by my other recipe on this site, Asian Steak Bites, and pairs well with these amazing side dishes: Miso Glazed Eggplant and Sesame Braised Cabbage.
What is Japanese Steak Sauce?
Japanese steak sauce is a savory condiment used to enhance the flavor of steak and other dishes like chicken, seafood, and vegetables in many Japanese restaurants. Also featured in Japanese steakhouse chains like the popular Benihana, it's creamy, tangy, and slightly sweet with a delightful umami flavor that perfectly compliments any steak dish.
While this popular Teppanyaki sauce is usually made with mayonnaise or cream, my homemade sauce recipe uses toasted ground sesame seeds and soy sauce as its main ingredients to produce a creamy base, making it dairy-free and vegan-friendly. Aside from being the best steak sauce, this hibachi sauce is also the perfect sauce for prawns, lobsters, scallops, chicken, or fish.
Ingredients for hibachi sauce
- Toasted white sesame seeds: When blended with other liquids, toasted sesame seeds format a creamy, nutty, and slightly sweet base for the steak sauce.
- Onion and garlic: Essential to most sauces!
- Soy Sauce: Serves as a liquid to blend the ingredients while adding a rich, creamy flavor.
- Water: Thins out the steak sauce and makes it easier to blend everything.
- Vinegar: Rice wine vinegar brings out the sweetness of other ingredients and adds a slightly tangy taste.
- Mustard powder: Add a little bit of heat to the white sauce.
- Oil: I'm using grapeseed oil to emulsify the sauce to make it thick and creamy. You can use any neutral oil like vegetable oil, canola oil, or avocado oil.

How to make Japanese Steak Sauce
Teppanyaki Sauce
- Using a Vitamix or a high-powered blender. Blend all the ingredients except the grapeseed oil.
- Once the mixture is fully blended, slowly incorporate the oil. Let the blender emulsify until it creates a thick sauce.
- Set the sauce aside in the fridge until you are ready to serve.
Top tip for hibachi sauce
Blend all of the ingredients until smooth except the grapeseed oil. This flavorful sauce should be thick and creamy, not runny or chunky. Add a bit of soya or more water if it's too thick.
Equipment
- High-powered blender or food processor like Vitamix
- Cast iron pan
- Jar with lid
- Tongs
How to store your hibachi sauce
Store the leftover Teppanyaki sauce in a jar for up to 7 days in the fridge if it lasts that long. I could drink this stuff.
