How to make for Asian BBQ Maui Style Beef
Prepare the Asian BBQ marinade
- In a blender, put all the ingredients and blend until smooth.
Prepare the beef
- Cut the beef into ½ inch thick strips.
- Place the boneless beef shortribs in a large Ziploc bag or a container.
- Add the marinade. The marinating time should be at least 2 hours.
Air Fry Method
- Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees.
- Air fry the beef for 5 minutes on each side until you get a bit of a char on each side. Refrain from overcrowding as you will steam the beef instead of getting a good sear.
Pan Fry Method
- In a large skillet, on medium-high heat, pan-fry the beef for 5 minutes on each side.
Grill/BBQ
- Preheat the grill, and barbecue the beef for 5 minutes on each side until you get a nice char.
Substitutions
Beef short ribs - traditionally served with “Korean short ribs”, thinly cut beef short ribs. This cut can be expensive and hard to find. I used a boneless beef short ribs I got from Costco and I cut them into ½ inch thick strip. You can use sirloin as well and cut them to look like strips or picanha.
Any tough cut of beef will work as the marinade will tenderize it.
Asian BBQ Marinade:
Kiwi - is fantastic for marinades. It has an enzyme called actinidin that acts as a meat tenderizer. A substitute for this would be Asian pear.
Green onions - substitute ¼ white or yellow onion.
Pineapple juice - never use the actual pineapple for this only the juice. Pineapples have an enzyme that will break down the beef and make it mushy.
Soy sauce - Substitute any gluten-free alternative like tamari or coconut aminos.
Brown sugar - substitute white sugar or maple syrup.
Sesame oil - Toasted sesame oil would be amazing for this dish.
Garlic & Fresh Ginger - Fresh aromatics are important for this dish. Try not to substitute with garlic powder or ginger powder. Fresh is best!
Equipment
- Blender or food processor
- Knife
- Cutting board
- Large Ziploc bag or bowl with lid
- BBQ grill, air fryer, or large skillet
How to store and reheat
Store Asian BBQ Maui Style Beef in an airtight container in the refrigerator. To reheat, preheat the oven on medium heat to 350°F (175°C). Place the grilled boneless short ribs in a baking dish with the room temperature, cover with foil or paper towel, and heat for 15-20 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
