Dinner in 10 minutes with zero chopping. This is my version of lazy girl dinner. This beef rice bowl is thinly sliced beef (you can get shabu shabu beef at Costco) tossed in teriyaki sauce, honey, sesame oil, and chili crunch, then seared for 5 minutes and served over rice. Five ingredients, one pan, 10 minutes total. That is the whole recipe.

The secret is pre-sliced shabu shabu beef from Costco. It's already paper thin, so it soaks up the sauce instantly and sears in minutes. No marinating needed. Just mix everything in one bowl and hit the pan.
I've made this beef and rice bowl more times than I can count, and I landed on the honey plus chili crunch combo after testing it with teriyaki alone. Trust the extra tablespoon of honey, it's what gets you that sticky glaze.
This is my go-to on crazy busy days or when I am lazy and don't feel like cooking but I still need to feed my family. Trust me, this is way better than take out. I like to make a rice ahead of time, freeze or keep some in the fridge for the week. Quickly microwave it, sear the beef, make a salad or in this recipe I made corn. Make whatever you have in your fridge.

What kind of beef is best for beef rice bowls? Thinly sliced beef like shabu shabu or hot pot beef is best because it cooks in minutes and soaks up sauce instantly. I buy the pre-sliced shabu shabu beef at Costco. Asian grocery stores also carry it, usually labeled for hot pot or sukiyaki. It is the same cut I use in my beef bulgogi bowls.
Can I use ground beef instead of sliced beef? Yes, ground beef works with the exact same sauce. Brown 1 pound of ground beef over high heat, drain if needed, then stir in the teriyaki, honey, sesame oil, and chili crunch and cook 2 more minutes.
Do I need to marinate the beef? No, this recipe skips marinating completely. The beef is sliced so thin that it absorbs the sauce while it cooks, which is exactly why this is a 10-minute recipe. Mix and go straight to the pan.
Is this beef rice bowl spicy? It has a medium kick from 1 tablespoon of chili crunch, and you can easily adjust it. Use half a tablespoon for a mild version the kids will eat, or skip it entirely and add chili crunch on top for the adults only.
Can I meal prep this beef and rice bowl? Yes, this recipe meal preps really well for 3 to 4 days. Cook the beef, store it separately from the rice, and add the fresh toppings when you are ready to eat. It reheats in under 2 minutes. If rice bowls are your meal prep thing, my spicy salmon rice bowl preps just as well.
Where do I find shabu shabu beef? Costco sells pre-sliced shabu shabu beef in the fresh meat section, and most Asian grocery stores carry it fresh or frozen. Look for labels like shabu shabu, hot pot, or sukiyaki beef. Any of them work here.
